Preparing for a visit at home

Before the visit

Confirm the clinician’s identity, professional qualifications, fee and what the appointment includes. Ask whether your concern is suitable for a home assessment and whether any records should be available.

During the assessment

Physiotherapy usually begins with questions about symptoms and medical history, followed by an assessment appropriate to the person. The clinician should explain what they propose and obtain consent. You can ask questions or decline a proposed assessment.

Discussing a plan

Ask what the next step is intended to achieve, what limitations apply and how progress will be reviewed. Do not expect a guaranteed recovery time or a fixed number of sessions before an individual assessment.

Should a family member attend?

That depends on your preference and support needs. Discuss it with the clinician and agree what information can be shared.

Will every visit include exercises?

Assessment and recommendations depend on the individual. This guide does not prescribe exercises or promise a particular treatment.
